The Buffalo Bill Historical Center located in the Cody, Wyoming houses five separate and very unique museums. The Buffalo Bill Museum looks at the life of W.F. Buffalo Bill Cody and tries to separate his life story, both public and private, from the myths and tall tales of the Old West. The museum houses personal affects of the famous showman as well as artifacts from his Wild West Show. The huge outdoor extravaganza was seen all over the United States and Europe.
The next museum is the Whitney Gallery of Western Art. The museum displays paintings and sculptures of icons of the American West. Cowboys and natives are portrayed in both traditional and modern poses. If you are an art enthusiast or just a novice the museum will be a joy for all.
The Plains Indian Museum is a great opportunity to learn about the life and traditions of the plains Indians. Several tribes and nations are represented including the Shoshone, Pawnee, Kiowa, Comanche, and the Sioux. Artwork and exhibits show the natives in traditional dress and explains the complexity of their lives. It is considered one of the finest collections of plains native artwork in the world.
The next museum, the Cody Firearms museum, carries a huge selection of firearms from the United States and Europe. Some of the firearms date back to the 1500s. The Winchester Collection is the center piece after the Winchester Company in Massachusetts donated their collection in 1976. Even if you are not a gun enthusiast, the museum will offer a look at the history of the firearms and how they carved a niche into the American West.
Located only a hour from the east gate of Yellowstone, of course there is a geology museum. The Draper Museum of Natural History investigates the ecosystem and geological wonders of the Yellowstone area. Geysers are investigated and there are many exhibits describing the geographic wonder of Wyoming.
